Nigeria’s first female Chief Justice, Hon Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar has been sworn in Abuja
Justice Mukthar takes over from Justice Dahiru Musdapher, who officially retired at the mandatory age of 70 on Sunday.
President Goodluck Jonathan swore in Justice Maryam Aloma Mukhtar with a charge to her to tackle delay in the dispensation of justice, tacklecases of corruption and to engender the much needed judicial reform in the country.
The brief but elaborate ceremony witnessed an array of personalities including the first Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan who was attending such state function for the first time.
Other dignataries who attended the ceremony which was held at the council chambers included the Vice President, Namadi Sambo, the senate president, Senator David Mark, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, Deputy Senate president Ike Ekweremadu, and Deputy Speaker, Emeka Ehedioha as well as the Governors of Kano and Bayelsa states.
President Goodluck Jonathan who performed the swearing in ceremony also conferred on Justice Mukhtar who is Nigeria’s 13th CJN national honour of Grand Commander of Niger (GCON).
While describing yesterday’s event as “historic”, the president enjoined the new CJN to settle down to the urgent task of reforming of the Nigerian judiciary.
