An Abuja High Court has ordered former Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Aminu Dabo, to pay the sum of N1 million as damages to his two children over the infringement of their rights.
But speaking on the judgement, Dabo told Daily Trust on Tuesday in Abuja that he has appealed against the judgement, adding that his divorced wife, Hajiya Murja Haruna, was only being mischievous.
Murja had approached the court in September 2011 over the abandonment of his paternal responsibilities to the children named: Rasheed and Hafsat following their divorce in 2005.
In a judgement enrolment order obtained yesterday by Daily Trust, Justice M. A. Nasir held that the actions of Dabo were an infringement on the fundamental rights of the children as contained in sections 11, 12, 13 and 14 of the Child Rights Act, 2003.
Dabo’s estranged wife had urged the court, through her counsel Chris Alashi Esq, to compel him to provide secure accommodation in the FCT, maintenance, academic sponsorship, health care, recreation and access to him, being their biological father, until they attain the age of 18.
But the judge granted most of the reliefs sought. She also ordered Dabo to remit the sum of N70, 000 monthly to Murja’s bank account for the children’s upkeep.
According to the judge, “the little kids are innocent of whatever skirmishes existed between him and their mother.”
