Reacting to Obasanjo’s criticism of the new N5000 bill, the presidency through, Dr. Doyin Okupe Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on Public Affairs, told journalists in Abuja that: “There is $1000 bill in the United States and that has not negatively affected the economy there. It is not carried by all Americans, but by those who need it. The N5000 note will also be like that.” This is half-truth; the government used the same tactics to deceive the people when it increased the price of fuel. Okupe did not tell Nigerians that the last time United States printed the $500 and $1000 bills was before he was born, in 1934, 70 years ago. The government through Okupe did not tell Nigerians that it was meant primarily for large cash transactions between banks before the days of electronic banking. These bills were never intended for circulation. These $500 and $1,000 bills are not easy to find today. It’s a shame for a government that have reputable international technocrat like Dr. Iweala-Okonjo to continue to deceive the people.
