Nigeria police heighten security around embassies, foreign missions

American embassy, Abuja

Nigerian police has beefed up security around foreign embassies to prevent possible trouble over the US film which some Muslims say is offensive.

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, on Wednesday ordered the police to provide adequate security to all embassies and foreign missions in the country.

The directive was contained in a statement signed by Frank Mba, the Deputy Force Public Relations Officer.
The statement directed the Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs) in charge of zonal commands, as well as state Commissioners of Police to provide a 24-hour water-tight security in and around the missions.

It said the directive followed recent violent demonstrations in some parts of the world linked to a recent US film believed to have offended some Muslim faithfuls.

“The Nigeria Police has taken the immediate proactive security measures to ensure that no similar violence is replicated within our country,” Mr. Mba said.

The units to be deployed to the embassies include the Counter Terrorism Unit, Police Mobile Force, and Special Protection Unit.

The IG warned trouble makers to stay off the streets of Nigeria, as the nation’s security agencies would bring to bear the full weight of the law on all laws breakers.

He advised parents and guardians to monitor their wards closely, to protect them from negative influences of mischief makers who might want to lure them into criminal and unwholesome acts.
